to Serbian Society for Extracellular Vesicles!
Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are membrane vesicles released by cells into the extracellular space. They can transport all kinds of biomolecules to the target cells, conveying bioinformation to them and affecting their physiology. Therefore, EVs play an important role in intercellular communication, both in physiological and pathophysiological processes.
EV research is very important for three main reasons:
- understanding EV biology enables a deeper understanding of fundamental (patho)physiological processes in the organism, given that EVs are involved in all such processes,
- EVs have a great diagnostic potential considering that their composition reflects the physiological state of the cell from which they originate, and that EVs are readily available in biological fluids,
- EVs have great therapeutic potential given that they are biocompatible, have low immunogenicity, they are loadable and can be targeted.
Therefore, in 2022, the Serbian Society for Extracellular Vesicles was founded, aiming to improve scientific work in the field of EVs research in Serbia, through cooperation, training, improvement and use of capacities; exchange of scientific knowledge and information between EV scientists in the country and abroad; education improvement in this area; popularization of the importance of EV research as well as consideration of regulations for the use of commercial EVs-based products.
On behalf of the Serbian Society for Extracellular Vesicles, I welcome all colleagues whose research work is in the EV field.
