First SDIR-SrbEV seminar: Extracellular vesicles in cancer

As part of the collaboration between the Serbian Society for Extracellular Vesicles (SrbEVs) and the Serbian Association for Cancer Research (SDIR), a joint seminar entitled “Extracellular Vesicles in Cancer” was held on December 16, 2025, bringing together over 50 registered members of the two societies.

The aim of the meeting was to connect researchers from both societies through the presentation of their members’ work, as well as through discussions on current knowledge in cancer biology, diagnosis, and therapy, with a particular focus on the opportunities offered by the field of extracellular vesicles.

Welcome addresses were delivered by the President of SrbEVs, Dr Maja Kosanović, and the President of SDIR, Dr Milena Čavić. This was followed by an introductory lecture by Dr Kosanović (INEP, University of Belgrade), who provided an overview of the field of extracellular vesicles. Dr Milica Popović (Faculty of Chemistry, University of Belgrade) then presented her research conducted within two projects she leads, RESCALE-EV and EXPAND-EV.

Dr Ivan Jovanović (INN Vinča, University of Belgrade) spoke about the role of extracellular vesicle-derived miRNAs in shaping the tumor microenvironment and systemic responses in patients with glioblastoma, presenting key findings from his research. Early-career researcher Miodrag Vuković (Institute of Oncology and Radiology of Serbia, University of Belgrade) delivered an excellent critical overview of existing studies on extracellular vesicles from pleural effusions as a source of biomarkers in lung cancer diagnosis and research, and presented current results of the EXPAND-EV project in this area.

Dr Sanja Goč (INEP, University of Belgrade) addressed the diagnostic and therapeutic potential of extracellular vesicle glycosylation in cancer, presenting relevant experimental data. At the conclusion of the program, Dr Milena Čavić (Institute of Oncology and Radiology of Serbia, University of Belgrade) shared highlights from the WCLC25 and ACTC25 congresses, as well as opportunities for collaboration within ELBS.

The seminar took place in a highly cooperative atmosphere, with open and inspiring discussions that also addressed future modalities of collaboration between the two societies and their members.

The event was supported by the National Tourism Organisation of Serbia, which provided the venue and technical support. SrbEVs and SDIR express their sincere gratitude to the staff of the National Tourism Organisation of Serbia for their excellent cooperation.
